Arsene must know it’s time; this team lacks the quality

When it rains it pours my friends. Times, they are rough. To think we’re fighting for third. Although some of this was predictable -injuries finally caught up to us -all of us, fans, players, Arsene need to dig deep to get through this. Arsene can blame whomever he wants in the press, but this is a pattern beyond the pale. Arsene knows it too, big changes must be made because this team doesn’t cut it.

This is not a knee jerk reaction to today’s game, this is a pattern of play that has become to define Arsenal. More than just new goalkeepers are needed. More than just a new central defense. We need new strikers, new midfielders and more competition for places. We need new blood for a fresh mentality.

The solution is practical. It’s the one Arsene seemingly refuses to concede, at least publicly. It’s time to change our identify, which means a new approach to players. A big rethink on our entire team. As much as I love our type of game, unless we spend huge amounts of money to bring in the players necessary to excel, we need to adjust our targets.

Just think, only four years ago we were in the champions league final. But look at the structure of that team: we started that game in a 4-5-1. We can’t even play that formation with who we have now. And remember, we didn’t have Viera, Fab took his place.

Most importantly, that formation had an identity. We were aggressive, athletic, powerful, but also had technical skill.  Our players weren’t as famous as barca’s, but they struck fear into other teams. Check out our team in the 2006 final below -check out our bench! It’s no wonder we set a record for clean sheets in the champions league.

Arsene must know this, it was one of his most successful teams.  And frankly, all of his most successful teams have the same basic look. So as much as I love how we play, as much as Arsene loves it, it’s not working. It’s time to rebuild with a new identity and a new look. We don’t need to spend £30m on one player, but we do need to spend £50m on four and sell at least three. I love my Gunners, but sometimes changes are necessary.
